崇禎明代 A Late Ming Wucai Monkey Plate
A very rare late Ming, Chongzhen period, wucai enameled
plate with flattened rim, decorated with a design of a monkey under a fruiting
peach tree observing a deer and a bird and insects hovering above. Taken
together the design of a bird(s) (que), wasps (feng), a monkey (hou),
and deer (lu) forms the rebus, Juelu fenghou which expresses a
wish for high rank and wealth. The
flattened rim having alternating floral sprays and multi-colored diamond
lozenges. The base showing spiral configuration and chatter marks and a
six character kaishu mark of Chenghua within two concentric rings.
This type of plate is known with the central design being a different
composition but with identical decoration on the rim and they were made for
export to Japan. A similar pair are illustrated in "Chinese Ceramics From
The Gulexuan Collection", Krahl, 2003, page 100, Plate 68. |
