A conical shaped Brinjal bowl of gently flaring form set upon a high ring foot decorated with three incised chrysanthemum sprays in green and yellow enamels on an aubergine ground.  Where the flowers are white, the porcelain body is allowed to show through a clear glaze.  On the interior is a ruyi-mushroom motif with blades of grass.  On the base is a crudely drawn shop mark in underglaze blue centered within a double circle just inside the footrim.  These thinly-potted bowls having a fine white paste, enameled over the biscuit are generally dated to the Kangxi period although some sherds have recently been found at sites dating as far back as Tianqi, the late Ming period.  In fact there is a bowl with a yellow ground in the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, the Avery Brundage Collection, mark and period of Tianqi (1621-1627).  These bowls were made with a green, yellow, and white ground as well and also in a bell shaped form.

Condition:  One glaze chip restored, shown in details but very unobtrusive. Expected wear to the glaze on the interior and exterior.
