康熙 Kangxi Ruyi Shaped Scholar's Table/Stand

A finely wrought tripod stand or scholar's table decorated in the susancai palette. The table shaped in the form of a ruyi head is raised on three cabriole legs painted in aubergine enamel and black simulating wood grain (faux bois). An inset border of classic scroll picked out in yellow and black is positioned above the table apron beneath the table top, the edge painted yellow. The table surface is painted with flowering peonies and blossoming prunus branches, stylized rocks and a pine bough on the ground. The plants are all symbolic of the end of winter. An identical stand is in the Musée Guimet from the Grandidier Collection, No. G5144. There is a similar stand illustrated in The Great Fortune, Chinese and Japanese Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries, Georg Weishaupt, page 89, Plate 104 but is a 19th C version.
