康熙 Kangxi Susancai Dragon Saucer Dish

A saucer dish with rounded sides rising to an everted rim and raised on a ring foot covered entirely in a rich egg yolk yellow glaze.  The dish is decorated with both incised and painted overglaze polychrome enamels on a solid color ground, susancai, a practice begun in the Ming period.  In the center of the dish encircled by an aubergine double line border amongst green flames are two opposing five clawed Imperial dragons, one painted in aubergine and the other in green enamels contesting the flaming pearl.  In the cavetto are alternating pomegranate and leechee nut sprigs with a further line border at the edge of the saucer.  On the reverse is painted two bifurcated qilongs, one green and the other aubergine divided by fungus sprigs.  On the base are two concentric rings.  The footrim is unglazed.
