Small 光緒 Guangxu Iron Red Enameled Sanduo Stem Cup

A  small delicately potted stem cup decorated in the palette known as gai xu hong, red and white.  The bowl atop a short stem with a horizontal raised band encircling the stem. The gilt rimmed bowl decorated in iron red enamel (tie hong or fan hong) with a shou character between opposing facing bats and the sanduo: peach, pomegranate, and citron, beneath a border of pendant bats and above a lappet border. The base of the short ribbed stem painted with a sea of turbulent waves and the raised band decorated with a blue scroll framed by double line borders. In the interior of the cup is a single peach. The hollow stem is glazed white.  This overglaze enamel color combination is known as "sang et lait" in French meaning "blood and milk" or "melk en bloed" in Dutch meaning "milk and blood" and is also seen on numerous export items to Europe during the 18th century often with the addition of gilt highlights.
