康熙 Kangxi Turquoise Wine Pot (Dao Guan Hu)

A fine and unusual 'Cadogan' wine pot glazed overall in an exquisite 'fish roe-crackle' turquoise (peacock blue) glaze of varied rich tones. Potted in the shape of a pomegranate fruit, the swelling sides taper towards the scalloped neck rising from a high splayed foot. The spout and handle are shaped like a gnarled branch decorated with applied leafy sprays and the body is incised with a section of grid lines representing the bursting ripe fruit. The concave base with a hole leading to the tube up the center for filling is covered in a clear glaze. This configuration is known in China as an 'upside down filling wine pot', dao guan hu.
