康熙 Kangxi Aubergine Dragon Saucer Dish
A large Imperial saucer dish with rounded flaring sides raised on a
high ring foot covered entirely in a deep manganese-purple known as qiepi zi (aubergine-eggplant
skin purple) glaze draining away from the rim to a paler violet hue. On the exterior four striding Ming-style four clawed dragons in pursuit of the flaming pearl amongst flames and
clouds are incised beneath the glaze. In the center of the dish is a single four clawed Ming-style dragon
encircled by flames and ruyi head shaped clouds in pursuit of the flaming pearl
further encircled by a double line border. The foot rim partially covered
in glaze shows five spur marks where the dish rested on supports during firing. |
