順治 Shunzhi Winged Dragon Shallow Bowl

An extremely rare famille verte Ming styled shallow bowl raised on a high foot decorated with a ground of green swirling waves and whitecaps upon which are strewn prunus blossoms. In the center of the bowl is a whimsically faced winged sea dragon and in the cavetto placed on the directional axes are four of the eight horses of Mu Wang. On the exterior of the bowl the design is repeated with the remaining four horses. Appearing on the base in underglaze blue under a clear glaze is the apocryphal mark of the Ming Emperor 嘉慶 Jiajing in kaishu script within concentric circles.
清代 Qing Dynasty, 順治 Shunzhi Period (1644-1661)
Height:  2" (5.1cm)  Diameter:  7 1/4" (18.4cm)
Condition:  The dish has been cracked in several pieces and reassembled almost invisibly.

A very similar bowl with an identical mark illustrated in Shunzhi Porcelain, Treasures From An Unknown Reign by Michael Butler, Stephen Little, Julia B. Curtis, published 2002, Page 101, "Bowl Decorated With Mythical Sea Creatures".
