康熙 Kangxi Famille Verte Large Dish/Charger
A very rare large dish/charger
decorated with famille verte enamels with a scene from the story of Xixiang ji
(Romance of the Western Chamber also know as The
Story of the Western Wing), an opera written by Wang Shifu in the 13th C,
revived in popularity in the 17th C. The scene depicts Oriole (Cui Ying ying) and her maid Crimson with her
mother confronting Zhang who has returned to claim his bride having passed the
state examinations at the top of his class satisfying Oriole's mother's
requirement to wed her daughter. The scene is framed by diaper patterns
interrupted by lozenges with auspicious symbols painted on the rim of the dish.
