雍正 Yongzheng Famille Rose Boy's Bowl
A fine and rare bowl
with rounded sides rising to a flared rim raised on a ring
foot painted in overglaze low-fired
famille rose/ruancai (soft color) enamels, the result of the addition
of lead arsenate to the enamel mixture. A scene of five boys playing amongst the
banana trees is portrayed in pastel shades on the exterior of the bowl upon an orange-peel
textured (ju-pi)
lemon yellow ground. This Yongzheng example was
based on an earlier and larger bowl produced during the Jiajing period of the
Ming dynasty in the collection of Sir Percival David. The artisans here taking advantage of this new
'soft color' technique
using a brilliant rose colored ground on the interior of the bowl instead of the
aubergine enamel used on the bowl of the earlier period. The deep rose-pink
shade was derived from colloidal gold and is known by the Chinese as yanghong or Western
red. The interior is painted with peaches on a leafy branch and lotus flowers
and leaves in a pale green rendered against the deep rose orange peel textured
ground. |
