19th Century Famille Noire Calligraphic Ewer
A wine pot in the shape of the Chinese
character fu ( prosperity), this unusual
form is done in the Kangxi style. Of rectangular section and formed as an auspicious
character with a central oblong panel of a servant procuring wine on one side and a poet
seated in a garden on the reverse, the body with meandering chrysanthemum
blossoms reserved on a black ground. The handle and spout are decorated to simulate bamboo wrapping. During the Kangxi period these wine pots were
made in three forms, fu (prosperity), shou (longevity), and lu
(success). A complete set of three is in the Salting Collection. |
