康熙 Kangxi Famille Verte Chinese Fir Tree Plate

A fine Chinese export famille verte dish decorated in the center with a solitary Chinese fir tree drawn in iron red and shaded with gilt, the conifer's needles enameled in red, blue and green. Chrysanthemum flowers emanate from its base, all enclosed by an iron red double line border. The strong vertical element of the pine within a circle makes an arresting design impact, while in classic Chinese taste the scene depicts longevity and strength amidst poetic solitude. The white cavetto curves up to a brocade diaper ground border interrupted with four cartouche panels painted with floral chrysanthemum sprigs, beneath an underglaze blue line at the iron-brown washed rim. To the reverse three flowering, fruiting branches in iron red beneath an underglaze blue double line border.
