元代 Yuan Longquan Celadon Octagonal Foliate Dish

A very rare foliate edged octagonal lobed Zhejiang Longquan celadon dish, the cavetto decorated with alternating panels of stylized lotus blossom motifs and deer under a wutong tree. The octafoil shaped central panel is carved with a pair of birds roosting in bamboo. The entire dish is covered in an olive toned celadon glaze except for the unglazed ring on the base which has burnt red in the firing.

Provenance:  Old San Francisco collection; Vermeer & Griggs Collection No. 327
Condition: Restored cracks suffered from damage in the 1906 and 1989 San Francisco earthquakes, glaze abrasion on birds in central panel.
