Large 明 Ming Celadon Cong Vase (Cong Shi Ping)

A fine and large Zhejiang (Longquan) style celadon cong vase (cong shi ping). The tall squared body surmounted by a cone-shaped neck rests on a cylindrically formed foot. The rectangular sides have molded decoration on each corner. The vase is covered in a thick bluish green celadon glaze with large irregular craquelure darkening where the glaze has pooled in the recesses of the molded ribs. The base is glazed with only the footrim exposed. The vase shape first appeared in Neolithic hollow jade and bone artifacts of the Liangzhu culture and was adopted by the Song potters particularly for Longquan stonewares. This Jingdezhen vase is a copy of the earlier Song/Yuan stoneware cong vases.
