早明 Large Early Ming Celadon Peony Dish

   

A large Zhejiang Longquan celadon dish with an impressed medallion floral spray of stylized peony blossoms in the center.  The cavetto carved with a meandering peony scroll, the reverse undecorated.  The dish is covered overall in a thick pale olive-green translucent glaze.  An unglazed portion on the base is burnt red in the firing.

Provenance:  Robert Moore Collection, Vermeer & Griggs Collection No. 180
Condition: Excellent, surface scratches from use, glaze chip on rim.
