Pair of 順治 Shunzhi Rolwagen (諍芠丶) Vases
A pair of transitional (早清
early Qing) sleeve vases
decorated in "penciled" style and washes of underglaze blue. While this shape was originally made for the
domestic market it soon became immensely popular in Holland where it was called Rolwagen
(諍芠丶). The body of the vases are decorated with stylized rocks from which issue blossoming peony
plants with birds fluttering above, all framed between classic scroll
borders. On the neck are alternating sized upright petal forms enclosed by line
borders. The bases
are flat and unglazed showing a burn line where the glaze meets the biscuit. A similarly decorated jar from the Butler Family
Collection is illustrated in, Shunzhi Porcelain, Treasures from an Unknown
Reign, 2002 Art Services International (ISBN 0-295-98213-6), item #31. |
